Leanne Krueger for the introduction of Resolution 405 that honored the Justice Bell and its maker Katharine Wentworth Ruschenberger. Pa. state Rep. Leanne Krueger commemorated the centennial of the of the commonwealth’s ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guarantees women the right to vote.

Colonial Middle School Event
Women’s History Month will be recognized differently this year at a middle school in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Colonial Middle School (CMS) 8th grade students have a chance to demonstrate, in a project of their choice, what JUSTICE means to them and how the symbols of the past, such as the Justice Bell, represent justice today.
On March 9th, Amanda Owen will visit the 8th grade CMS’s history classes and present the story of the Justice Bell, and discuss how through perseverance, determination, and sheer will, women, such as Katharine Wentworth Ruschenberger and many others, worked tirelessly for justice, and finally got the right to vote, nearly 100 years ago.
Michele Stingle, 8th grade English teacher and JBF’s Education Director, along with Jennifer McCracken, 8th grade History teacher, will discuss with the students how social change occurs. When young people decide that something is not right with society, and they do something about it, movements happen. They march. They write. They sing. And in this case, the Plymouth Meeting 8th grade students will create projects, varying from letters written to their local representatives to 3-D printer models, to demonstrate their understanding of justice while recognizing the importance of the efforts of the women who paved the way.
The Justice Bell Foundation is sponsoring this project and will award six students prizes for their creativity, understanding, and representation of justice. Awards will be given on May 3rd at the William Jeanes Library in Lafayette Hill, PA.

The Justice Bell Foundation will join the Walnut Club and New Century Trust to present the film Equal Means Equal at the New Century Trust building at 1307 Locust St in Philadelphia. The evening will begin at 5:30 pm with a social hour with refreshments, hors d'oeuvres, and networking. Prior to the screening we will present our short video about the Justice Bell.

Mingo Stroeber, board member and Creative Projects Director, has created a special fund in honor of her maternal grandmother, Florence Worsham Harnly, a life-long member of the St Alban Chapter of the Eastern Star and an early Philadelphia suffragist who, in 1915, marched in a parade down Broad Street to obtain the right to vote for Pennsylvania women.
Donations to this fund will be used for historical research for our documentary, Finding Justice. You may choose to designate your tax deductible contribution directly to this fund. Learn more here: Florence Worsham Harnly Fund

Today we filmed Doug Gefvert, the carillonneur at the Washington Memorial Chapel where the Justice Bell resides, to learn historical information about the bell. He also showed us where the bell sat in the woods for decades. We are looking forward to showing you this important part of American history. Our first five-minute video will be finished soon.
